Hi, I'm Furqan,

I'm a 3rd year Biology & Physics Undergrad student at UBC, and am a man of hyperactivity! What drives me, is exploring biological & physical theories & systems, and how engineering makes these crazy and cool ideas into a reality!

As an engineer at heart, I started by teaching myself software to read intent out of noisy EEG & EMG systems, and actively contributed to engineering efforts in Signal Processing & Machine Learning at UBC MINT. I also developed firmware that sits between the sensors and the signal, so brain-computer interfaces behave outside the lab as well as in it!

Now, I am a Controls & Simulations Engineer at UBC Rocket, where I use mathematical & physical modelling & simulation, as well as mechanical & hardware engineering analyses, to help drive UBC Rocket to new heights!

Apart from my technical work, I LOVE entrepreneurship, and am actively involved in groups like UBC eProjects, n8n ambassadorship, and Qolour.

My Journey So Far

From first year at UBC to building rockets and wearables, one year at a time. Scroll to travel it.

Year 1 · Sep 2024 – Aug 2025

Landing at UBC

· Education

BSc + Co-op, Biology + Physics

The University of British Columbia

I am currently pursuing a BSc, with a Major in Biology (Evolutionary Biology focus), with a minor in Physics & Philosophy!

I am also a co-op student, getting active startup & industry experiences throughout my degree!

· Work

Creative Designer

The Stargazers' Club

My first real professional experience!

I wrote scripts, and worked on creative design & artistic strategy, for instagram posts, carousels, and short cinematic reels, supporting designedbystellar campaigns!

Our work amassed 100k+ views on instagram, and growth from 100k -> 115k followers!!

It was an amazing and eye-opening experience! Thanks Aarav!!

Jul 2025 – Oct 2026

UBC MINT

UBC Multifaceted Innovations in Neurotechnology

  • Jul 2025 – May 2026

    Machine Learning Engineer — MindTap

I joined the MindTap team to turn noisy EEG signals into clear intent, so anyone can control a smartphone hands-free, no surgery needed! Together we took home an Innovation Award at the 2026 Simon Cox Student Design Competition!

  • May 2026 – Oct 2026

    Firmware Engineer

I built the firmware that sits between the sensors and the signal, so assistive neurotech powered by EEG & EMG works out in the real world, not just in the lab!

Special thanks to Danish & Thomas for the opportunity!

Year 2 · Sep 2025 – Aug 2026

Leading and shipping

Oct 2025 – present

UBC eProjects

  • Oct 2025 – Apr 2026

    Corporate Relations Specialist

I researched and reached out to prospective partners for the club, and we wrapped up with over $2,500 awarded in sponsorships!

  • Apr 2026 – present

    President

Now I lead the club's direction, helping students go from 0 → 1 → 100 in entrepreneurship and startups, which I LOVE!

Special thanks to Nathan, Shinjini, and Alisa!

· Work

Optimization Intern

Upgraded

I dove into government grants, AI agents, and GTM engineering, and helped optimize the product and the business for high-ticket B2B!

Special thanks to Will!

· Work

Growth

Slashy (YC S25)

Following my work at Upgraded, I subsequently landed a role in Growth at a YC Backed company, where I focused on enterprise clients for B2B, and attended some cool events and conferences!

Special thanks to Harsha!

Fellow

Intern Insider

I joined the Intern Insider Fellowship, an 8-week summer cohort all about building a personal brand on LinkedIn! I worked on finding my voice, building in public, and telling my story, with guest sessions on venture capital and how recruiting really works from the inside!

Special thanks to Nicholas and Eric!

Ambassador

n8n

I'm the n8n ambassador here in Vancouver, helping people discover what automation can really do! In September I hosted Vancouver's first n8n community meetup, bringing 30+ student builders, new grads and early founders together to learn, connect and swap workflows. And I'm just getting started!

Special thanks to Jacq, Melinda, Adeline, and Bart!

· Research

SRP: Number Theory

UBC

I dove into the number theory of elliptic curves, discovering how points on a curve can be "added" with pure geometry, and how all the rational ones grow from just a few basic points!

Lots of drawing, experimenting, and plenty of "wait… that actually works?!" moments!

To close out the program, I gave a talk, "Two Fermats", on how two very different theorems connect to the encryption protecting you online, from RSA's primality tests to the elliptic-curve key exchange securing Google, now paired with post-quantum encryption!

Special thanks to Kishen Narayan, Negin Shadgar, and Yuveshen Mooroongen!

Year 3 · Sep 2026 – Aug 2027

In progress

· Work

Control & Simulations Engineer

UBC Rocket

I'm helping launch UBC Rocket to new heights! Using mathematical & physical modelling and simulation, plus mechanical & hardware engineering analyses, I help the team design, test, and fine-tune how our rocket flies!

Special thanks to Hannah and Kenneth!

· Work

Founding Engineer

humonos

I'm a founding engineer at humonos, building wearable tech that reads cognition in motion, tracking attention, mental load, and fatigue in the real world, not just the lab, to help decode human performance! My focus is on product and R&D!

Special thanks to Jaskirat and Karin!

Welcome to the Present!

Non-invasive EEG

The starting point: electrical activity recorded outside the brain.

Conceptual illustration of the project purpose, not a hardware configuration or measurement.

I was a member of UBC MINT's MindTap team. The project uses non-invasive EEG and machine learning for hands-free smartphone control.

The team received the Innovation Award in honour of Ari Kinarthy at the 2026 Simon Cox Student Design Competition.

Purpose

An EEG-based assistive interface using machine learning for hands-free smartphone control.
